Artist Spotlight – PHOAP 2017
Silvi Glattauer – Finalist
Central Lands 1 – Pigmented inkjet on Cotton Rag Paper
Born in Argentina and coming to Australia as a young child, Silvi Glattauer is an Artist that primary centres around nature and narratives. Her approach is to collect, to archive, to classify and to record. Her narratives are strongly related to storyboards of time and places. “There is always a connecting thread about materiality, about object, and about preciousness. I was born in Argentina and came to Australia as a young child. I often go back to visit the high planes and deserts of the North West of Argentina. Much of my art practice questions this pendulating comparison/juxtaposition between the 2 countries that I identify with.” Silvi is drawn to the Australian Landscape particularly the desert areas as a way of clearing space in her head. Landscapes that offer extensive spaces, provide Silvi an opportunity to disconnect from the tangible and obvious visual elements one would associate with traditional landscape photography. “Under the vast and endless skies of these ephemeral landsape, spread deserts and plains where one feels the pristine atmosphere of silence so much that your own breath becomes loud as your heartbeat. Rather than the iconic landscape images we associate with the outback, these images act as a metaphor for what we lack every day as we go about our “list of things to do” – moments of inner stillness that draw the viewers into a contemplative visual space” – Artist Statement; Central Lands 1.
Don’t forget to visit the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery and place your vote for the “People’s Choice Award”. The winning Artist will be awarded $500.
